They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.

  • The United Church of Christ, Southbury is a community of faith, believing in the power and grace of God as brought to life, taught and exemplified by Jesus Christ. We believe that faith without action is hollow. Good works are as intrinsic to faith as are heartbeat and breathing to life. Faith is a muscle that must be exercised. We actively serve each other and look outward to serve both our local and wider community. We strive to be living examples of Jesus’ presence.

Inclusiveness begins in the message of respect that is communicated to and modeled at all times—respect for staff, for peers, for those that share their world-views and those who have different views, for those they know well, and for those who are new and unfamiliar. To encounter difference is to grow, and to embrace it is to be transformed. From an understanding and respect is born the prospect of lasting peace.

We are an active church. There are several fellowship groups as well as a number of fellowship events throughout the year. We are highly engaged in mission work through our town, region and world. This commitment to missions includes both financial and “hands-on” components and combines several different initiatives. We sponsor an annual mission trip for our senior high youth group. This mission trip is a major event in the life of our church as fundraising happens throughout the year. We are blessed with a strong, smart and gifted church body. We have a well-rounded mix of talent in our congregation, enabling us to “take on” a large variety of challenges.

Much is asked of our congregation in time, talent and treasures and we respond generously. Mission and other needs, both financial and material goods, are consistently supplied when asked and someone is always available to help. We have a robust governance structure that offers the opportunity to involve many parishioners in various functions while also offering gentle accountability. Our current governance offers a strong organizational structure which makes us a well-run, fiscally responsible church.

  • During our gatherings, expect to encounter the presence of God through praise and worship, heartfelt prayers, and inspiring teachings. Our aim is to create a space where you can hear from God and experience His transformative power.

Sunday morning starts with music, a few announcements, greeting one another and a meditation. There is a children’s message before school-aged children are released to Sunday school. Scripture reading is followed by a sermon, offering and prayers of the people. On the first Sunday of each month we also offer communion.

  • At UCC Southbury, our focus is on Christ rather than attire. There's no need to dress up, and most of us dress casually. On game days, you might even spot someone proudly sporting a Southbury or Pomperaug jersey.

  • Kids are a big deal to God, so they're a big deal to us and we take our responsibility to nurture and uplift our children seriously.

The mission of all UCCS youth programs is to encourage and support the innate joy and curiosity of our youth as they learn about themselves, develop a love of community, an appreciation of their own talents, and respect for others.

We value the inclusion of children in our worship experience. During the service, children are welcome to worship alongside their parents. Additionally, following the Children's Message, they have the option to participate in Sunday School designed just for them.

Our programming offers opportunities to explore volunteerism, participate in overnight lock-ins, camps, trips and other projects to build relationships through shared experience and serve our wider community. Our hope is that, because of the foundational positive peer and adult role models and experiences at UCCS our youth will enter their adult life with a support system to bolster their self-awareness, confidence in their abilities and excitement about the journey ahead with a good sense of how to be respectful to others. Our goal is to create a culture of kindness, respect, love and warmth that goes beyond our church and is felt by our families and wider community.

Our youth programming is open to all who would like to participate, which is why we are committed to maintaining secular, non-sectarian youth programming outside of Sundays.

  • Nursery care is provided for children up to age 5 for the duration of the Sunday service. Our nursery is located on the first floor, directly outside the church office. Enter through the side parking lot door and the nursery will be straight ahead.

Each week we have two nursery caregivers available for childcare or you are welcome to stay in the nursery with your child and view service streamed on a screen.

If you know you will be visiting with a young child, completing a nursery registration form will help us prepare. If not, our nursery caregivers can take your information when you arrive.

  • The United Church of Christ, Southbury is a quintessential clapboard ‘New England church on the green’ that has been a cornerstone of the community for almost 300 years.

Founded in 1732, the Southbury Congregational Church was dwelled in several sites until the third church was built on the present site in 1844. In 1923 the members voted to federate with the Methodist Episcopal Church and from 1923 until 1957 this church was known as the Federated Church of Southbury. The Federated Church served the spiritual needs of the community until the Methodist Conference requested that the federation be dissolved. In 1957 the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church joined to form the members of the United Church of Christ, and in 1966 the members of this church voted to join the new denomination. At that time the name of the church became The United Church of Christ, Southbury.
